Suppose you’ve won a seat into the $2500 No-Limit Hold’em tournament at the World Series of Poker. You’ve made it through the dinner break, and now you’re playing the last round of the evening. You wanted to end Day One of the event as one of the chip leaders, but right now you’re just happy to have an average stack. At least you figure to be able to play Day Two of the three-day event.
With 30 minutes to go till the end of Day One, you look down at the Ah Qh in late position. The player in Seat 6 has come into the pot for the minimum bet. You make the standard raise. The Big Blind and Seat 6 both call the raise. Here comes the flop: Jh 10s 9h. “I’ve got a monster draw,” you’re thinking, trying to maintain your poker face. “If I can win this hand and double or triple up, I’ll be in a lot better shape for tomorrow.” Big Blind bets the minimum, Seat 6 calls, and you call.
The turn card is the 3d. Again the Big Blind makes the minimum bet, but this time Seat 6 pushes all his chips into the middle. Mentally counting him down, you think that you may have him covered but you’re not certain. What’s your best play?
If you’re in a gambling mood, you could call in the hope of drawing your needed card — but I think that would be a sucker play. You have a big-big draw at the double nuts, yes. But before you act, ask yourself this question: “Do I want to pin my tournament life on a draw with one card to come?”
I suggest that your best play in this situation is to fold. If you had wanted to play this hand all-in, you should’ve done it on the flop when you had two cards to come. Fold it and live to play another day.
