Ace-Small Doesn't Always Deserve a CallAce-Small Doesn't Always Deserve a Call

A lot of players like playing ace-small suited around back, and that’s okay in certain situations. Just be careful how you play any weak ace after the flop. For example, suppose you are sitting on the button with the Ah 5h. Two players have limped into the pot and you also limp. Both blinds call, making it a five-way pot.
The flop comes Ac 9s 2c. You’ve made top pair, weak kicker. The small blind checks, and the big blind bets the size of the pot. The two limpers fold, and now it’s up to you. What’s your best play?
Some inexperienced or undisciplined players would call the big blind’s bet. But if you’re a thinking player, you will fold.
When a player bets into several players from a front position, he usually has a made hand, not a draw. If the bettor has an ace in his hand, your ace is almost certainly out-kicked. Further, since he is in the big blind in an unraised pot, he could easily have flopped two pair. You started off with a weak hand and it still looks weak — dump it.
