Don’t play too many hands:
Initially when people start playing poker, all they want to do is to just play. So, they tend to take up and continue with any hand like JS 4D. Fundamentally, you should not be playing such hands. Playing is certainly fun; but, playing it right is more fun in the long run!
Not using pot odds is another mistake:
When you feel that your hand needs improvement, you should go ahead and use pot odds to determine if you should call or not. Also, do not call too much using pot odds. As well, you can use the odds calculator to do this job when you are playing online poker.
Don’t play too many different types of games:
Don’t become jack of all trades and master of none. Stick to one variant of the game as much as possible, at least till you master that game and are winning consistently. Playing different variants before you excel in one will result in you trying to apply the same strategies for all your games, which undoubtedly results in frequent losses.
Of course, in the beginning try all the variants possible to see which game you will like more and have the natural knack with. But, once you decide on one variant, stick to it until you master it.
Not considering other players’ hands:
Poker is a game of people and minds. You cannot calculate the strength of your hand unless you evaluate or analyze the hands of other players on the table. The strength of your hand is relative to the cards in other players’ hands. Initially, many people just focus on their hand and try to improve it, and do not concentrate on what other people might be holding. It is highly advised that considering other players’ hands from the initial stages itself.
Not keeping track of previous games:
Many people play well but do not keep track of the statistics of their games. You need to maintain a record of your wins/losses. This will help you tremendously in analyzing your failures and gives you a chance to understand where you are making the mistake, because most of the time, they are repetitive since they are spontaneous. Of course, keeping records will also help if your jurisdiction taxes high the income from gambling.
Keeping track will help you with your expected scores and in deciding the amount that you can put at stake. Also, you will know what kind of opponents you have won most and what strategies you need to improve to win more consistently.
Many good players lose playing games that they statistically cannot beat, just because they did not keep track of such games that they played earlier.
Don’t play too many multi-table tournaments:
Accepted, multi-table tournaments do have an enormous luck factor than traditional ring games, and certainly they are more enjoyable. But, you are not going to learn much skill in this setting.
Moreover, the stakes are low at the ring games and the players at these games are usually not that proficient; so, you can hone your skills without risking huge amount of money. Of course, you must play tournaments as well, but it is advised that not to focus only on tournaments.
Don’t play completely by rules:
Don’t play completely by rules because this will make you more predictable when you play with regular opponents and when playing in the card rooms. Especially, no-limit players should be more concerned with this than limit players. Even the slightly experienced players can pick up the similarities and strategies that you repeat more than two times.
Don’t play in the same pattern or don’t stick to the rules of the book. Mix up your style and strategy. Furthermore, change the expressions you use when you are bluffing. Also, change the tables frequently so that you are not against the same players frequently.
