I will have to agree with your comment about playing end (or corner) machines. At the casinos I attend, it is much harder to find a end machine, and when I do get one, my winning % has been much higher than playing at machines in the middle of a row, or in an isolated area of the casino.
I think you best bet is to target "high-traffic" areas, and keep an eye out for a machine that has not paid out for a long time. I like to "wander" the casinos a lot, and when I see a machine that has not paid out in a long time, I will take over from the previous player, and will usuallly come out on top with some good payouts.
