7.JUMPING JOKER
The Jumping Joker is a great little card trick. Many items of card magic rely on revealing a chosen card. The more dramatically you can do this the better the effect. With very little practise this one provides a unique way of revealing the card.
STEP 1
First you will need to make the special gimmick. Simply take one of the jokers from the pack and cut away the corner as in Fig. 1. You are now ready to go.
STEP 2
First place the joker on the bottom of the pack without anyone seeing. Then select a volunteer and bet them that you can find any chosen card simply by riffling through the deck.
STEP 3
Fan the cards as in Fig. 2 and ask your volunteer to choose any card. Make sure that they don’t select the bottom one (the Joker).
STEP 4
Tell them to remember their card and to place it on top of the pack. Then make one complete cut of the cards. It appears now that their card is lost in the deck. In fact it is right next to the joker.
STEP 5
Take the cards as in Fig. 3 and pull your finger from the bottom of the deck, along the corner to the top. Riffle the cards as fast as you can.
STEP 6
The Joker will pop out as in Fig. 4.
STEP 7
Now lift the cards so that they are facing the spectator as in Fig.5. Their chosen card will be one back from the Joker. Try to reveal this as dramatically as you can.
Aces Wild is a ridiculously simple card trick to perform which will still amaze your friends and family. Just remember to master that false shuffle as this makes all the difference to the effect.
Before beginning this great card trick you will need to set up the deck with the four aces on the top.
STEP 1
To convince your audience that there is nothing wrong with the pack of cards you will need to do a false shuffle. The easiest way to achieve this is to do a Riffle Shuffle, simply letting the top 5 or 6 cards fall last.
STEP 2
Choose a spectator from the audience and ask them to cut the pack roughly in half. Now ask them to do the same with these two piles. You will need to direct the cutting carefully so that the pile with the aces on top is at one end of the four.
STEP 3
Ask your volunteer to pick up the pile of cards on the opposite end to the one with the aces. Now ask them to put the top three cards onto the bottom of this pile, then to deal the next three cards onto the other three piles.
STEP 4
Have the volunteer repeat this procedure with the other three piles.
STEP 5
Build up a dramatic finish as you have your volunteer turn over the top card of each pile to reveal the four aces!
If you are into gambling tricks or bar bets then you’ll enjoy this one. All you need is a book of matches and a sucker who is willing to part with a little cash. The sucker won’t be hard to find, this looks such a good bet that they’ll be lining up to part with their money.
STEP 1
Having found your volunteer, take out a book of matches and remove a single match, being careful to keep it flat.
STEP 2
On one side of the match write 10-1 on the other write 5-1. Explain to your volunteer that they can bet as much as they want on how the match will land. If the side showing says 5-1 you will pay them 5 times the bet and if 10-1 is upwards you will pay ten times the bet. However, if the match should land on its side then they will lose the bet.
Believe me they will be only too willing to take you up.
STEP 3
As many times as you throw the match in the air it always lands on its side! And here’s how it’s done. After the bets are made simply bend the match as in Fig. 1.
STEP 4
Don’t forget that the above move should be done with your hand palm down so that it’s not seen. Now whenever you throw the match in the air it will land as in Fig. 2
RIFFLE SHUFFLE
Everyone at MFA has been amazed at the popularity of card sleights and flourishes. I guess everybody likes to impress!
If you want to get started on the road to learning flourishes then the riffle shuffle is a great place to start. When you have mastered this why not move on to the Waterfall Shuffle.
STEP 1
Cut the cards into equal piles and place them end to end as in Fig. 1.
STEP 2
Pick the cards up, holding them as in Fig. 2.
STEP 3
Now invert the cards on the table, lifting the front ends as in Fig. 4. Note the position of the fingers.
STEP 4
You will need to practise to get the distance between the cards right, but when you have that perfected it is a simple matter to slowly release the cards so that they interleave. Then simply push the cards together to complete the move.
