Poker Hand Rankings

Poker Hand Rankings Back

Poker Hand Rankings is the first thing that you should be very familiar with if you want to play poker. Otherwise, how would you know if your hand is strong enough to raise a bet or not?

Poker Hand rankings refers to the order in which different sequences of combinations of cards rank to in order to decide the winner. For example, if you have a sequence of numbers and your opponent has no sequence, then, your hand is strong because you have a high-rank combination in your hand.

Almost all the variants of poker have similar ranking. Anyway, you can learn the poker hand rankings from the illustrations given below. Have a good Hand!

The Royal Flush

This is the highest possible rank in a game of poker. A Royal Flush is a sequence of A, K, Q, J, and 10. This is also called as Straight Flush.
Straight Flush

Five cards in a sequence, of the same suit. An Ace can be used in the highest straight (10, J, Q, K, A) and in the lowest straight (A, 2, 3, 4, 5).
Four-of-a-Kind

Four cards of the same number or face value (“quads”).
Full House

Three cards of one number or face value and two cards of another number or face value. If more than one player has a full house, the full house with the highest ranking three of a kind (“trips”) wins.
Flush

Five cards of the same suit. If there is more than one flush, the hand with the highest card(s) wins.
Straight

Five cards in sequence. Cards can be in any suit. An Ace can be used in the highest straight (10, J, Q, K, A) and the lowest straight (A, 2, 3, 4, 5).
Three-of-a-Kind

Three cards of the same number or face value (“trips”).
Two Pair

If two players have two pair, the hand with the highest pair wins. If they have the same high pair, whoever has the second highest pair wins. If they have the same two pair, whoever has the highest fifth card (“kicker”) wins.
One Pair

Two cards of the same number or face value. If two players have the same pair, the highest outside card(s) wins.
High Card

The Ace is the highest card. Hand with the highest card will win if no other conditions are met.

In poker, certain combinations of cards (generally called as poker hands) outrank other combination of cards. The winner will be decided depending upon the rank of the cards he or she is holding at the time of showdown if the game doesn’t stop where everyone but one folds.

These hand rankings are widely accepted among other card games as well along with poker. The reference to the Hand can sometimes be made to the five-set combination where the community cards are also taken into consideration. However, more often the hand is referred to as the pocket cards or the hole cards that are dealt to the player initially.

It is very important to be very, very familiar with the poker hand rankings so as to play any variant of poker. Just knowing them will not do, because it will be very spontaneous for you to decide when to raise, fold, or call. And you cannot decide this response unless you know the poker hand rankings. Only good knowledge about poker hand rankings is going to give you that spontaneity to calculate the odds of your hand and judge accurately whether you have good chances of winning or not.

The poker hand rankings illustrated with images above are most commonly accepted rankings. The hand rankings might differ for some variants or tournaments, which you need to be aware of before going all-in!

For example, in some home games they might decide upon different hand rankings to break a tie situation than that is applied in professional poker tournaments.

Once again try to remember the order of poker hand rankings:

1. Royal Flush

2. Straight Flush

3. Four of a Kind

4. Full House

5. Flush

6. Straight

7. Three of a Kind

8. Two Pair

9. One Pair

10. High Card, also called a No-Pair

Hope this page on poker hand rankings will be of help for beginners finding their way into the exciting world of poker. Enjoy fellows![img][/img]
